The Eisenhower Executive Office Building (EEOB) is located next to the West Wing, and houses a majority of offices for White House staff. Originally built for the State, War, and Navy Departments between 1871 and 1888, the EEOB is an impressive building that commands a unique position in both our national history and architectural heritage. Later in the war it is sometimes said to have had connections to General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander for D-Day. Due to the heavy bombing of London in mid-1940 it was decided to build deep-level shelters. The Goodge Street shelter was completed in 1942, being situated beneath the existing underground station.
